Once again the reason I don't have SCA heraldry has been underlined to me by observing SCA heraldry in practice.

So how did the rock-frotting session go?

Quite well. I re-discovered various rock samples from many years back, including what is quite possibly one of the most complete non-proprietary sets of channel iron deposit samples anywhere (I've never seen any others...) and although I may forget where I got a sample, I seem never to forget the sample itself. (So there are pretty rocks I am sure are mine, but I don't know where they specifically came from; but I can generally narrow it down to continent, region, and maybe a particular field trip.)

He drooled and there were many exclamations of "Come and take a look at this!!!!"...

And some cool rocks.

Wow, I really need my eyes checked or something. I read that as Frock fitting. I wondered if someone had dragged Z. kicking into the 16thC. which is full of man frocks.

Me in a man-frock, if you can get to that link.

Laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect in proportion as we know how they are made.
- John Godfrey Saxe

Laws and sausages ain't got nothin' on heraldry.

I wonder if I can register argent, six sausages gules...

What is the default arrangement for sausages, I wonder. I presume palewise in fess, as they would be arranged in the frying pan...

I think I was asuming palewise three, two and one, but palewise in fess would be good.

An orle would also be excellent.

I am now firmly convinced that the reason all my attempts to register heraldry have failed are due to the system of registration in place. Only the complete destruction of the extant physical files will solve this problem.

Hold on - you want to register heraldry? I always assumed you weren't remotely interested. What the hell: email me and we'll work it out. I'll bet I can come up with something to your satisfaction that will pass, provided you're willing to be flexible with your definition of satisfaction.

I don't particularly _want_ to, and I'm not actually remotely interested, but I'm a peer these days and I'm apparently supposed to. I've several times submitted or attempted to submit both name and simple heraldry (that vaguely resembles shields I've used at various points), and I'm given to understand that I currently have an application submitted but I haven't heard anything about it - name Járnulfr Þórulfsson (although the J should not be used, but apparently the documentation needed doesn't support the I spelling I used from runestones....) and device Per saltire arrondy vert and argent.

This most recent attempt was what, 10-11 months ago, via the rather helpful Ulrich. Earlier attempts fizzled out at trying to reconcile heralds with reality.

I don't recall ever seeing this submission pass by me. Perhaps the postal gremlins ate it when I moved in July?

Plus I do not believe any money for any submissions from you has passed into the account in NZ (for which I have all records). Perhaps you might like to check back with Ulrich also.

I definitely remember signing forms. Maybe I never remembered money. Will check.

Oh, but you're right about the files. They need to be nuked. Start from scratch, with heraldic jurisdictions in each family of kingdoms.

Just use something (if you're interested in having heraldry, of course) and ignore the heralds.

Per pale azure and or works fine for me, and I doubt anyone can actually register it.

I must admit to some vindictive self-satisfaction when my Heraldry passed a few months ago, after being informed while in NZ that a winged kracken would never pass.
Apparently it made SCA Heraldic history, the first single creature on a plain background to pass in almost a decade.

Which in part has led to the lyrepipe I'm working on, turning it into a giant kracken. One, because amuses me, Two, it's heraldic clothing that will keep me warm while working the late night Watch, and three, one of the 'Things Icka Is Not Allowed to do in Southern Gaard' was wear funny hats.

-But then, as it was explained to me, 'Kiwi Can-do' means that when someone says 'You can't do that', a Kiwi says 'Oh, yeah? WATCH ME.'

Your heraldry was returned for some reason?

As far as I know, it vanished into the aether, but maybe I'm expecting a little much after 10 months or so.

Come on. The current bitchfest has nothing to do with the practice of heraldry, and everything to do with people being people.

An organ of a major international group in the age of the intertubes that only accepts submissions on paper in a particular format and ink type, and still stores them in a physical database, on paper, in a shed somewhere, so someone actually has to physically sight them to do final conflict check? Nope, it has everything to do with the practice of heraldry. There should be a separate college per kingdom, no bothering conflict checking between kingdoms, because nobody ever bothered in period, and an an online open database.

The Avignon College of Heralds will happily accept your submission.

I think the correct procedure is to have him apply, reject it, and then wonder why your house was burnt down two weeks later along with what happened to all your chickens. *That's* nice and historical. Or entertaining. One of the two. Possibly both.

Oh hell yes.

And that's me with my Crux Staff hat on, saying that. Paper files are teh suck.
