You know, I'm being cranky and curmudgeonous about Avatar these days. A couple of weeks ago, I was still vaguely keen on seeing it, just once the crowds and hype had died down, but now I've had enough spoilers and snippets and reviews and fannish squee over the effects that I'm just no longer interested in seeing it, almost just to piss off the people that have seen it. There are enough niggly bits in it about the simple plot and generic macguffin (c'mon, calling your unobtainium 'unobtainium' is just lazy), even just from the trailers and stills, that piss off my uber sensitive ability to fail to suspend disbelief. Particularly the floating mountains, actually. That's a damn big Chekov's gun, with all sorts of possibilities, but AFAIK, it's just there to look cool. If you're going to depart from reality that far, an effect like that just for scenery, in a nominally future version of this universe, nominally with the same physics, this is to me a serious failure to use Chekov's gun.

Interestingly, while I was at school I did have a very very brief holiday romance with someone who at one point called me by my sister's name. A number of years later they did indeed get together and are still a couple to this day.

Well I posted this in response to another post entirely - no idea how it ended up on yours - sorry!

Avatar has amazing special effects. See it or don't :-)

Righto. I was wondering at the non-sequiturness of it.

I can't be arsed any more, due to excess gushing over it. I no longer care about the coolness of the special effects, they'll turn up in other movies, if it's just the effect that's important.

And seeing as I've got less than two eyes, it's not actually certain whether I'll reliably be able to see the 3d stuff for the whole movie before what remains of my right eye gives up and I get a headache.

That would be a pain. I like how the 3D is just there to make the world more real and they don't feel the need to remind you by poking you in the eye with it all the time.

The story is OK, but not astonishing or surprising.

What I think makes the movie is the way an alien world made with CGI feels so very very real. There is nothing cartoony about it at all. They aren't people in alien suits. They are aliens who are conveniently bipedal.

I also quite like how they don't try to explain the unusual stuff. There is a major piece of technology which makes the whole thing work and they don't even attempt to explain how it works.

I only saw two movies last year, and I am glad that one of them was Avatar.

OK I'll stop gushing.

I should get the Chekov's gun reference but ashamedly I don't.

two movies at the cinema I mean - I saw a fair few more than that on DVD.

Only reason to see Avatar is the 3D - which requires stereo vision, and kinda wears off after 20min anyway. After that, you're just watching a random SF blowing-up-shit flick, which you could do cheaper at home.

I was entertained. I didn't think it was overwhelmingly wonderful. I thought the special effects were very good but the story was rather, as you put it, lazy in places. Probably wouldn't go a second time.

The thing that really spoiled it for me (and I don't know if the glasses are the same everywhere) was that the 3D glasses wouldn't sit properly over my specs. I mean, c'mon guys, it's not like we don't know a lot of people wear glasses! Lets make some with a little ledge at the top to hold 'em in place over people's frames! I'd recommend that anyone who wears glasses take a little blu-tack with them. :-(

Me too. Every time I read how wonderful it is, I get less enthusiastic to see it, and I wasn't very enthused at the start.

I've seen it. The 3-D was about all they weren't shoving down your throat. Visually quite beautiful but the story was utter shite, though it was entertaining despite itself. I walked out a bit angry to tell the truth.
